A Motor Holding Brake is an electromagnetically actuated braking device mounted directly on the non-drive end of an electric motor. Its primary function is to hold a motor's shaft in a fixed position when the motor is not powered, preventing unwanted movement due to gravity, inertia, or external forces.
This type of brake is not designed for dynamic braking (i.e., stopping a rotating shaft), but rather for static holding—especially critical in vertical or safety-sensitive applications.
⚙️ How It Works:When power is ON, the brake coil is energized, pulling the armature plate away from the friction disc, allowing the shaft to rotate freely.
When power is OFF, spring pressure forces the friction disc to engage, holding the shaft in place.
Fail-Safe Design: Engages automatically when power is removed, ideal for holding loads securely during downtime or power failure.
Compact Integration: Mounted on the motor flange or shaft, requiring minimal additional space.
Quiet Operation: Designed for minimal noise in holding and release modes.

Industrial Multi-Disc Brakes are high-torque, compact braking systems designed to provide smooth and reliable stopping, holding, or tensioning in demanding industrial applications. These brakes utilize multiple friction and steel discs arranged alternately to multiply the braking surface area, resulting in higher torque in a smaller footprint.
They can be electromagnetically, hydraulically, pneumatically, or mechanically actuated, and are available in dry or oil-immersed (wet) configurations depending on the application.
⚙️ How It Works:Friction and steel discs are stacked alternately and connected to the rotating and stationary parts of the system.
When actuated, force is applied axially to compress the disc stack, creating friction and stopping or holding the rotating component.
The use of multiple discs increases torque capacity without increasing overall diameter.
High Torque Output: Multi-disc design provides greater braking force in a compact unit.
Compact Size: Space-efficient, especially useful in enclosed or integrated systems.

Typical parts of a clutch‑brake combination:
| Component | Function / Notes |
|---|---|
| Clutch stator (field coil, rotor etc.) | The stationary (or relatively so) part of the clutch that, when energized, attracts the armature to transmit torque. |
| Brake stator | The stationary magnetic part of the brake which, when energized (or in some designs de‑energized if spring‑applied brake), engages the brake armature or pad against friction surfaces. |
| Common Armature Plate | Some designs share a common armature plate between clutch and brake — when clutch is to transmit, the armature engages with the clutch rotor; when brake is to stop, the armature is pressed against the brake surface. This sharing helps compactness. |
| Rotor / Clutch Rotor | Connected to input (or sometimes output), rotates with the shaft. Clutch rotor works when clutch is engaged. |
| Brake Disc / Pad | Engages with friction surface to stop the output. |
| Springs | For fail‑safe designs, springs may ensure that in de‑energized state brake is applied (or clutch is disengaged) automatically. |
| Coils / Electromagnets | Separate coils usually for clutch and brake, to energize magnetic fields that cause engagement/disengagement. |
| Housing / Mounting | The combo unit is packaged in a body, may be foot‑mounted, flange mounted, open or enclosed, as per design. It often has hollow or solid shafts for input/output. |
Here are the typical specs and features that define a clutch‑brake combo:
| Spec / Feature | Typical Values / Considerations |
|---|---|
| Torque rating | Ranges vary widely. For example, some Indian units provide from ~ 7 Nm up to ~ 450 Nm. Others (INTORQ etc.) around 7.5‑120 Nm in some size series. |
| Voltage / Electrical | Many are DC (common voltages: 12 V, 24 V, 42 V, 90 V etc.). Coil power, duty cycle etc. matter. |
| Duty / Operating Frequency | Designed for high cycling (frequent engagement and disengagement). Units with low inertia armatures improve response and reduce wear. |
| Air gap adjustment / wear compensation | Friction surfaces wear; some designs have mechanisms to adjust air gaps externally without full disassembly. |
| Mounting types | Flange mounted, foot mounted, open or enclosed housing, may have hollow shafts or solid input/output shafts. |
| Protection / Insulation | Coil insulation class, enclosure protection (IP ratings), heat dissipation, etc. Many use asbestos‐free lining, heat resistant materials. |

A Motor with DC Fail-Safe Brakes is an integrated drive solution where an electric motor is combined with a spring-applied, electrically released brake that operates on DC voltage. The brake is designed to automatically engage (apply braking force) when power is cut, ensuring safety in case of a power failure, emergency stop, or system shutdown. This type of brake is commonly referred to as a fail-safe brake, and is ideal for applications where load holding, positioning, or emergency stopping is critical.
🛑 How It Works:The DC brake coil is energized during normal motor operation, releasing the brake so the shaft can rotate.
When power is cut off (intentionally or due to fault), the spring force engages the brake, clamping onto the shaft or brake disc, and bringing the motor to a stop or holding it in position.
This ensures fail-safe braking — the brake is applied when power fails.
Fail-Safe Operation: Spring-applied, power-off braking ensures automatic engagement during emergencies.
Compact Integration: Brake is mounted directly to the non-drive end of the motor, saving space.
High Safety & Reliability: Ideal for vertical and safety-critical applications.
DC Brake Coil: Operates typically on 24V, 90V, or 190V DC (often with rectifier if AC input is used).
Manual Release Option: Enables brake release during maintenance or power failure.
Low Noise Operation: Designed for minimal operating noise, often with noise-dampening pads.
Friction Material Wear Adjustment: Some models include manual or automatic wear compensation.

An electromagnetic disc brake is a braking device that uses electromagnetic force to control a friction disc. Essentially, it marries electrical activation (via a coil or magnet) with a friction mechanism (disc, pads) to stop or hold a rotating shaft or disc.
These brakes are often fail‑safe / spring applied — meaning braking occurs automatically when electrical power is removed (so if power fails, the brake engages). They are used for stopping, holding, or safety braking in many industrial and mechanical systems.
Key ComponentsHere are the main parts of a typical electromagnetic disc brake:
| Component | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Brake disc (rotor/friction disc) | The rotating element attached to the shaft; the part against which the brake acts to create friction. |
| Brake pad / friction lining | Mounted on either the armature or a pressure plate; contacts the disc to generate braking force. |
| Electromagnet / Coil | When energized, it produces magnetic force to move parts (e.g. attract an armature or plate) to disengage the brake, or to control the brake action. |
| Armature or pressure plate | A movable part that, under spring pressure or magnetic force, presses pad(s) against the disc to apply braking torque (or releases them). |
| Springs | For “power‑off / fail‑safe” brakes, springs push the pad(s) to contact the disc when electromagnet is de‑energized. They provide the force needed for braking in absence of power. |
| Housing / Frame / Hub / Mounting Hardware | Provides structure, mounting to machines; hub is often keyed or splined to the shaft. |
| Air gap / adjustment mechanism | To allow for correct distance between armature and disc, to compensate for wear, etc. |
| Electrical terminals & power supply | To energize the coil (DC or AC), possibly with control electronics, rectifiers or power units. |
The operation can be summarized in two major states:
Brake Applied (No Power / De‑energized)
In a fail‑safe design, when the electromagnet is not energized, springs push the armature/pads against the disc. The friction between pads and disc stops or holds the rotor (shaft).
Brake Released (With Power / Energized)
When current is supplied to the coil, a magnetic field is generated. This field pulls (or otherwise moves) the armature or pressure plate, overcoming spring force. This movement separates the pad(s) from the disc, allowing the disc to rotate freely — i.e., brake is off.
Some models invert this logic (depending on design), but the “spring on, power off” fail‑safe is common for safety applications.
