Internal and External Pneumatic Components – Description

In pneumatic systems, components can generally be categorized as internal or external based on their location within the system and their role in controlling, distributing, or using compressed air.

✅ Internal Pneumatic Components:

These are components found inside pneumatic actuators, cylinders, or control devices, directly involved in the mechanical functioning and internal air flow.

Examples:

• Piston and piston rod: Convert air pressure into linear or rotary motion inside a cylinder.

• Seals and O-rings: Prevent air leakage within cylinders and valves.

• Springs: Used in internal valve mechanisms or single-acting cylinders for return stroke.

• Internal valves and spools: Control airflow inside direction control valves.

• Cushioning mechanisms: Absorb shock inside pneumatic cylinders for smoother operation.

• Magnet rings: Enable position sensing in magnetically actuated cylinders.

✅ External Pneumatic Components:

These are located outside the cylinder or actuator and manage the supply, control, and conditioning of compressed air throughout the system.

Examples:

• Air compressor: Generates the compressed air used in the system.

• Air preparation units (FRL): Filter, regulate, and lubricate air before it enters the system.
